-users: Asterisk Community lost a valuable contributor today
December 13, 2006
Sad news today from Kevin Flemming on the -users list, condolences to all involved.
I want to inform the community that last night one of our valuable
contributors and long-time community members, Rich Adamson, passed away
after a long battle with cancer.Rich spent many, many hours sharing his valuable telecom and
transmission systems experience with everyone who could benefit from it;
he helped countless people solve audio quality and echo problems with
their analog lines when others had given up trying to help. He also
spent many hours helping those of us who work on Asterisk, Zaptel and
Digium hardware improve our products by providing valuable feedback and
testing our changes. We want to express our deepest sympathies to Rich's family and thank
them for allowing Rich to spend much of his limited time with us. He
will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
More Cisco 7970 Notes with Asterisk 1.4
December 12, 2006
Looks like the 8.2 series of firmware still doesn't register properly with asterisk. Though the phone can make and accept calls, I am still seeing the dreadful "little red x" on my extensions. Hopefully Asterisk or Cisco will fix something soon!
Firmware load seems successful so far. Although MWI still does not seem to be working. Grrr! What did they break between 8.0.2 and 8.0.3/8.0.4/8.2!!
More updates to follow..
New Cisco 7970/7971 Firmware
December 12, 2006
Found some new firmware was released on Dec 10th for the 7970 series of phones. This brings it up to 8.2 instead of the 8.0 series. Lets hope it fixes the MWI issues we're all experiencing.
I haven't finished my full testing of this firmware yet, however it does seem to boot on the phone.
I also noticed that in order to perform the upgrade, and if your tftpd server is running on linux, you will have to rename a file to a different case to get the phone to recognize it, and load it.
Do this for it to work..
tftproot # mv jar70sip.8-2-0-55.sbn Jar70sip.8-2-0-55.sbn
Now the phone will take it during the upgrade. Stay tuned for more 7970 action soon!
Unrelated News: Night Owls Are More Creative, Says Study
December 12, 2006
Not that this is VOIP related, it is related to our field I think. I myself am one of the people who tend to stay up all night and sleep during the day. Well, at least I used to until I went out on my own to field work. Most people are day-walkers so I've had to adjust my schedule somewhat to accommodate. Which is all well and good for getting normal daytime things done, but I still need some nights to "stay up late and ponder things and hack". Simply said, I get things done better, quicker and smarter at late hours. I seem to fall into the category of the people interviewed for this study. Could this be a little bit of scientific proof as to why I usually come up with better and cooler ideas later at night than during the day? I can remember being like this since I was a young child and staying up late at night to do homework (read: screw around with things other than homework).. It's nice to see studies like this that back up my claim when people question my motives. Score one for the italian scientists! :)
