Asterisk App Store announced at Astricon
September 30, 2008
Today Dean Collins posted a note to the mailing list regarding a new application store for Asterisk users and companies alike. The store will feature opensource apps, as well as closed source apps. Developers of Asterisk Modules or Addons will be able to decide upon a model and sell their creations via the store.
The store isn't live yet, but probably will be so within the next 30 days. Sounds like it might be quite promising for those smaller developers that don't have the budget some of the larger companies do for marketing.
With stories of people quitting their jobs after 6 months of an application being on the Apple Iphone Application store, who knows what will be possible with the Asterisk App store.
We're excited. Thanks Digium, great idea.
Here's a link to Dean Collins site with MP3 audio from the Developers Conference Call where the App Store was initially discussed.

So what a minute. They will charge us to use Skype with our Asterisk

I talked with both Skype and Digium today at Astricon for a while on this... it's actually going to be amazing. The license for Skype will be the same way you license g.729. So yes, it's not free... but you're only paying for in use channel capabilities... but think of the benefits... Skype will work just like let's say SIP or ZAP or IAX2 would in the dial plan... so you could have.... SKYPE\username registered as an extension... or ... even in a queue which I am really excited about. You could registered as many usernames as you want... and then have as many simultaneous calls as licenses... great for calling out and even really awesome for calling in. Plus, unlike regular skype, on the callin, you can have multiple channels. It's really very exciting.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AstriCon 2008)—September 25, 2008—Digium®, creator and primary developer of Asterisk®, the leading open source telephony platform, and Skype™, the leading global Internet communications company, today announced the beta version of Skype For Asterisk, which will allow the integration of Skype functionality into Digium's Asterisk software and enable customers to make, receive and transfer Skype calls from within their Asterisk phone systems.
"Throughout our individual histories, Skype and Asterisk have each disrupted conventional communication methods through innovative, cost-effective solutions," said Stefan Öberg, vice president and general manager for Skype Telecom and Skype for Business. "We are excited to be working together with Digium to offer small and mid-sized businesses an even more powerful communications solution to conduct business worldwide."
Specifically, the beta version of Skype For Asterisk is an add-on channel driver module that integrates Skype Internet calling with Asterisk-based telephony products. Skype For Asterisk also complements small and mid-sized business users' existing services by providing low rates for calling landline and mobile phones around the world.
"Working together with Skype, our goal is to help businesses boost productivity and reap the rewards of feature-rich telephony software, all while saving a substantial amount of money," said Danny Windham, CEO of Digium, the creator and sponsor of Asterisk. "The Skype For Asterisk beta program is a first step towards adding Skype capabilities to Asterisk-based phone systems and enabling them to reach more than 338 million Skype users."
The beta version of Skype For Asterisk will enable business users to:
* Make, receive and transfer Skype calls from within Asterisk phone systems, using existing hardware.
* Complement existing services with low Skype global rates (as low as 2.1US¢ per minute to more than 35 countries worldwide).
* Save money on inbound calling solutions such as free click-to-call from a website, as well as receive inbound calling from the PSTN through Skype's online numbers.
* Manage Skype calls using Asterisk applications such as call routing, conferencing, phone menus and voicemail.
Following the beta period when the product is released, Skype For Asterisk will be sold and distributed by Digium and its worldwide network of resellers.
Live at AstriCon
Stefan Öberg will provide the first public demonstration of Skype For Asterisk during his keynote address today at AstriCon, the annual Asterisk user and developer conference. AstriCon attendees are also invited to stop in and see a demonstration of Skype For Asterisk at the Skype booth on the expo floor.

Cisco Systems Inc said on Friday it plans to buy privately held Jabber Inc, which specializes in instant messaging software, to bolster its own line of Internet-based communications products.
The two companies did not disclose financial terms.
Denver-based Jabber provides open instant messaging technology that supports different devices and applications, and allows users on separate networks, such as Google Talk or Yahoo Messenger, to connect with each other.
"With the acquisition of Jabber, we will be able to extend the reach of our current instant messaging service and expand the capabilities of our collaboration platform," Doug Dennerline, senior vice president of Cisco's Collaboration Software Group, said in a statement.
Cisco said it expects the deal to close by the end of January.

How to resolve DNS SRV timeouts with Polycom Phones
September 18, 2008
This was posted today to the -users mailing list, we used to run Polycoms (yay for switching to Aastra) and never experienced this in our environment, but it may help some of you.
Just in case anyone is having DNS SRV timeouts with their Polycom phones, the following Polycom KB article should help:
We have set tcpIpApp.port.rtp.mediaPortRangeStart to 65000. Based on our experience and the fact that the phone's DNS resolver starts over from port 1026 on a reboot and increments from there, this should give us about a year before the ports overlap again, in the unlikely event that the phones won't get rebooted in the meantime. YMMV.
How to play Asterisk Voicemail messages from a website with some simple code

Here's a little snippet of code we found on the mailing list for playing your voicemail files directly from a web browser.

This works for IE. It displays the Play Button of the Windows Media Player. No need to download files or anything. It plays right off the web page.
